Spiritual Sexuality Begins with Self-Kindness
I recently had the joy of joining Karolina Hagren for The Rewire with Pleasure Summit, a beautiful conversation series exploring pleasure, embodiment, intimacy, healing, and the wisdom of the body.
In our conversation, we explored one of the themes closest to my heart: spiritual sexuality as a path of connection, liberation, and love.

For many people, sexuality is surrounded by confusion, silence, shame, fantasy, pressure, or longing. We may grow up without meaningful education about our sexual energy, our bodies, our pleasure, or the deeper relational and spiritual dimensions of intimacy.
That was true for me as well.
For many years, I did not know that sexuality could be approached as sacred. I did not know it could be a doorway into presence, healing, pleasure, and union. I did not know that sexual energy could be honored as a natural, intelligent, life-giving force.
When I first encountered the Quodoushka teachings, I discovered a completely different way of understanding sexuality: not as something separate from spirituality, but as one of the most direct ways we can experience aliveness, love, and connection with creation.
What Makes Sexuality Spiritual?
In the Quodoushka tradition, sexuality is understood as much more than a physical act. It is connected to the mystery of life itself.
Each of us is here because two energies came together and created something utterly unique. Our bodies, our breath, our desire, our tenderness, our longing, and our capacity for pleasure are all part of this sacred mystery.
Sexuality can be used for procreation, of course. But it is also a doorway into pleasure, bonding, healing, intimacy, and spiritual connection.
We are designed for pleasure.
And when we approach pleasure with awareness, kindness, and respect, it can become a path of awakening.
Pleasure Begins Within
One of the most important things I shared in this conversation is that the source of sexual energy is not outside of us.
Yes, sex and intimacy can be deeply beautiful with another person. But the source of aliveness begins within our own body.
This aliveness is always there.
It may feel like warmth, tingling, radiance, softness, breath, movement, vitality, or a quiet inner glow. It may be subtle at first. But as we learn to listen to the body and become friendlier toward ourselves, this energy begins to awaken.
And the key to unlocking this energy is not performance.
It is not technique.
It is not trying harder.
It is self-kindness.
Self-Kindness as a Doorway to Intimacy
Self-kindness is one of the most powerful foundations for spiritual sexuality.
When we meet ourselves with kindness, we begin to soften. We stop fighting ourselves. We become more present with what is actually happening in the body, the heart, and the nervous system.
This kind of presence allows intimacy to deepen.
When we are with a partner, relationship often becomes a mirror. The other person may bring forward our fears, vulnerabilities, longings, tenderness, and places where we are not yet fully open.
This is not a failure.
It is part of the path.
The places that feel tender are often the very places asking for love, acceptance, and healing.
A Simple Heart Practice
During the interview, I shared a simple practice that can be done alone or with a partner.
Place your hand on your heart.
Look into a mirror, or if you are with someone you love, look gently into their eyes.
Then say:
“I love you, and I open myself to you.”
Repeat this slowly.
“I love you, and I open myself to you.”
This practice may seem simple, but it can be profoundly opening. It reminds the body and heart of something very deep: love is already here. Openness is possible. Connection can begin now.
You do not have to wait for the perfect moment, the perfect partner, the perfect setting, or the perfect version of yourself.
You can begin with kindness today.
The Elements of Sacred Sexuality
In our conversation, we also spoke about the elements — water, earth, wind, and fire — and how they live within our sexuality.
Water is our flow, juiciness, emotion, and receptivity.
Earth is the body, the ground, the sacred physical vessel.
Wind is breath, mind, movement, and spaciousness.
Fire is passion, heat, desire, and transformation.
We are not separate from nature. We are nature.
When we remember this, sexuality becomes less about performance and more about communion — with ourselves, with another, and with life itself.
A Guided Practice for Tenderness and Self-Friendliness
I also led a short guided practice during the summit to help listeners connect with a place in their life that may feel tender, uncertain, or draining.
The practice begins with breath and gently invites you to notice where that tenderness lives in the body. Instead of fixing it or analyzing it, you simply bring kindness to it.
You may imagine a benevolent presence — a Dakini, Shakti, Shiva, or another loving presence — placing a warm hand over yours and reminding you:
Even this belongs.
This is the essence of self-friendliness.
We do not need to fight, grasp, avoid, or force transformation. Sometimes the most powerful healing begins when we slow down and allow kindness to meet the exact place where we are.
